Close Reading Strategy- REQUIRED on ALL ASSIGNMENTS!

1.  Even though directions instruct you to read the story first, DON'T DO IT!  ALWAYS read QUESTIONS FIRST, and highlight important words.   
2.  Paraphrase the directions.

3.  Read the selection, highlighting evidence that supports your question highlighting.   Annotate the text with personal reactions, connections, and questions.

4.  If able to write on the text, circle unknown words and attempt to define them using context clues.

5.  On multiple-choice questions, eliminate (mark out) any answers that do NOT have text evidence to support them.   HIGHLIGHT the word(s) that causes you to believe the answer incorrect OR provide text evidence that proves the answer incorrect.

6.  On short answers or paragraphs, ALWAYS check to see that what you have written matches everything that you highlighted in the question in Step 1.

7.  Circle the CORRECT answer.  Record text evidence proving the answer correct.
